What is Automated Certificate Generator?
Definition
Software that fills a certificate template with each recipient’s name, course, date, and ID from a spreadsheet, LMS, or form, then exports PDF or PNG files without designing every certificate manually.
An automated certificate generator is mail-merge for awards: one layout, many names.
Typical pipeline:
- Design the certificate in Canva (name, title, date, ID as separate text layers)
- Collect recipients in Google Sheets, CSV, or an LMS export
- Render one PDF (or PNG) per row
- Email the file or store it in Drive / the LMS
Built-in Canva path: Bulk Create from a CSV. Fine for a single workshop. Not an API, so it will not fire when a student completes a module.
Automated path: Import the Canva certificate into Layerre. Trigger from a new sheet row (Zapier/Make/n8n) or from your LMS webhook via API. Walkthrough: auto generate certificates from a spreadsheet and how to automate certificate generation. Email delivery: personalized certificate emails.
What to put on the template:
- Recipient name
- Program or event title
- Completion date (formatted as display text in the sheet)
- Unique certificate ID for verification
- Organization mark (static)
Output: PDF for the official record, PNG if you also want a LinkedIn-style share image. Combined multi-page PDFs help when you print a whole cohort at once.
